Types of Facilities There are different types of senior housing options and care. Find out below what will best meet your seniors’ needs. They are active and totally independent. They enjoy a lifestyle filled with recreational, educational, and social activities. There are no additional amenities provided such a personal care or meal service. ___________________________________________________________ Assisted Living Facilities Assisted Living Facilities provide a special combination of residential housing, personalized supportive services, and care. The seniors are in general alert but unable to live safely on their own. They need assistance with personal care such as bathing, dressing, grooming, eating, or toileting. They require medication monitoring. ___________________________________________________________ Residential Care Facilities for Elderly (RCFE) also known as Board and Care These types of facilities are licensed by the State Department of Social Services to provide care for seniors in a home setting. RCFE provides three meals a day, personal assistance with medications monitoring, laundry, housekeeping services, and some provide transportation to doctors' clinics. They assist seniors with activities of daily living such as bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, and eating. Many RCFE have Dementia approval programs and are qualified to care for Alzheimer’s/Dementia residents. Many also have Hospice Waivers and are approved to care for hospice residents. To verify a valid RCFE license, contact or visit your State Agency website. ____________________________________________________________ Nursing Homes or Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF) Nursing Homes are designed for seniors who are in need of 24-hour skilled medical and nursing care. It can be temporary stay due to surgery or long-term due to illness. Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF) are designed for seniors with complex physical and cognitive conditions. SNF offers the highest level of care. Seniors that are in ventilators or needs tracheostomy care. They require IV therapy, tube feeding and aggressive wound management. They offer intensive rehabilitation services for the disabled, injured or ill persons. ____________________________________________________________ Alzheimer's/Dementia Care Facilities These types of facilities are designed to meet the needs of seniors with these diseases. These seniors require complete personal care for most activities of daily living. They are unable to recognize familiar faces and have difficulties recognizing loved ones. Seniors who demonstrate challenging behaviors such as wandering, confusion, agitation, forgetfulness, and poor judgment are appropriate for this type of housing. All facilities have security systems to prevent seniors from wandering away. Staff are required to have specialized training and work experience to care for these seniors. ____________________________________________________________ Home Health Care Home Care is a general term to describe services delivered at home to recovering, disabled, or terminally ill persons in need of medical, nursing, social, or therapeutic treatment. Agencies that provides for this type of care are licensed by the State. They provide homemakers to assist clients with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and eating. They also provide light housekeeping such laundry, meal preparation, and house cleaning. They provide Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPAs), and Registered Nurses (RNs) for more complex health care needs. ____________________________________________________________ Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC) These communities are combination of independent living, assisted living, and nursing care all in one location. ____________________________________________________________ Adult Residential Facilities (ARF) These facilities serve adults ages 18 to 59 years of age. Most of these adults have developmental disabilities such as mental retardation, cerebral palsy, autism, epilepsy, spinal bifida, traumatic brain injuries, and certian neurological impairments.
